High-intensity discharge lamp or HID lights are electrical lamp
s that produce light by the use of an electric arc in between tungsten electrodes inside a translucent and sometimes transparent fused alumina arc or quartz tube. The tube contains both gas and metal salts . The gas activates the arc's initial strike. As the arc is struck, it heats the metal salts, evaporates them , forming plasma that increases the light's intensity from the arc and significantly lowers power consumption. High-intensity kinds are a type of arc lamp , too.
HID lights compared to incandescent and fluorescent lights are better in energy efficiency as they provide more light output for a much smaller electrical input , producing more lumination than just heat. Their lighting effectiveness is comparably higher and better : they produce more light for each unit of power consumed .
Many kinds of chemicals are materials used by the arc tubes and they have differences in performance especially in the characteristics such as lifespan, visible light, color, temperature and efficiency in energy consumption .
The element that produces visible lights in HID lights is the arch that's well-stabilized inside the arc tube of refractory envelope type that has a wall-loading of a little above 3 W/cm² (19.4 W/in²).
Mercury vapor lamps became the first types to be commercially sold . Initially, they produced light with bluish green color but the newer versions produce less tinted lights with the colors being barely noticeable. However, sodium vapor as well as metal halide lamps are fast replacing the less popular mercury vapor lamps due to recent improvements.
The almost pure white light is the outcome of ceramic metal and metal halide kinds of lamps as these are quite useful in many applications that need neutral lighting such as in TV and multimedia production, sports venues, vehicular lamps and fancy aquariums. HID kits are highly versatile and are mostly applied in many uses due to their practicality and high versatility .
HID kits equipped with low pressure kind of sodium gases are very efficient . The CRI effective of the HID lights is almost zero and mostly visible light is emitted by the lamps that have deep yellow orange coloration , making anything viewed in this lighting monochromatic in appearance. This makes them highly effective in photography as safe lights to use. Whiter light with less tint is produced by higher pressure sodium lamps but there's still some orange pink cast although minimal. Newer versions have color correction and give off much whiter light, but some efficiency is sacrificed
Much like other lamps , the HID kits contained in ballasts support the function of the arc . The method employed in first striking the arc varies: there are some metal halide and mercury vapor lamps that are typically initiated by the working of a third electrode near a main electrode as other lamps typically are initiated by spikes of high voltage .
